My Week 1 Media Vote: D1-2 Men's Volleyball

1. BYU (2-0) Consensus #1. Powerful pin attackers in Langlois, Patch and Sander, experienced middles, and depth of talent. Took down George Mason and #3 Loyola handily. 2. UCLA (3-0) Traveled eastward and took out George Mason, Ohio St. and Penn St. on the road. The 6-2 offense is proving to be successful for the Bruins with Freshman Micah Ma'a getting swings in. 3. Long Beach St. (3-0) The TJ DeFalco era at "The Beach" has started, but it's Kyle Ensing who is grabbing the headlines. Solid and consistent play by Freshman setter Josh Tuaniga and the returning of Libero, Andrew Sato. 4. Loyola (1-2) Started with losses to a good UCSB team and to #1 BYU. The quality win over then #2 UC Irvine still has them up. 5. UC Irvine (1-1) Still tinkering with the lineup that has the potential to be deep and talented. UCI will need to recover from a tough 5-set loss to then #3 Loyola at the AVCA Classic in Provo. 6. UC Santa Barbara (3-1) Had a 3-1 loss to a developing Lewis team but came back to take down the defending National Champions, Loyola and a few other MIVA and EIVA teams. 7. Ohio St. (2-1) Miles Johnson and Nicholas Szerszen will be names you'll be hearing out of the Buckeyes A LOT this year. 8. Hawaii (3-0) Things are looking good for Hawaii with the addition of Stijn Van Tilburg at Opp along with returners Siki, Kupono Fey and Jennings Franciscovic. They've got a favorable schedule this year. 9. Penn St. (1-1) Split with MPSF teams but are a sure EIVA favorite. 10. Lewis (3-1) Rebuilding after losing key personnel from last year, but will still be in the mix. Look to them to get better as the year progresses.
